AI Overview
The Act of Contrition is a Catholic prayer expressing sorrow for sins, a detestation of them because they offend God, and a firm resolution to sin no more and avoid near occasions of sin, typically said during the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) but also used privately to seek God’s mercy and grace for forgiveness and a renewed spiritual life. It’s a core part of penance, showing humility and trust in God’s love, with versions ranging from traditional to more modern expressions of repentance.
Key Elements of the Prayer
Sorrow for Sin: Acknowledging wrongdoing and failing to do good.
Detestation of Sin: Hating sin not just for punishment, but because it offends God.
Firm Resolution: A strong promise, with God’s help, to amend one’s life and avoid future temptation.
Seeking Mercy: Asking for forgiveness and grace to live better.
Example of the Traditional Act of Contrition
“O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because of thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Thy grace to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen.”
Purpose and Use
Sacrament of Reconciliation: Said after confessing sins to the priest.
Private Prayer: Used daily or when feeling remorse, even outside confession.
Spiritual Renewal: Helps to restore one’s relationship with God and seek healing.

Examination of conscience and act of contrition during LOTH
I have a question. I regularly, at morning and evening prayer, do a quick examination of conscience and act of contrition. I don’t have a vehicle so rely on someone else to take me to Mass and can only get to confession once a month or so.
Am I doing this too much? If I had the ability I would go to confession weekly. I don’t find myself committing mortal sins very often and still confess my venial sins.
Is it okay to do this during the LOTH as often as I do?
