hola lemon8 🍋 ~ your girl is back with another post and today we have a DIFFICULT topic to discuss (speaking from experience 🥲)
basically i didn’t tell my parents that i had a boyfriend until we had been together for a substantially long time, and the thought of breaking the news to them was TERRIFYING because the last time i tried it went terribly (granted he was a walking red flag and i guess they saw that clearly 🫣)
as someone with extremely protective but nonetheless loving parents, let me give all of you who may be struggling with this as much as i did some tips regarding how to tell your parents that you’re in a relationship 🫢
1️⃣ prepare what you’re going to say beforehand
– this is gna sound crazy but i had a SCRIPT which i read off verbatim
– it’s super important to know what you’re going to say and the order in which you deliver your points, if you’re as crazy as me i wld recommend practising with a friend 😅
– the last thing you want to be is a mumbling, stumbling and fumbling mess
2️⃣ mind your tone!
– with protective parents, the moment you mention anything about boys, their guard would be UP HIGH.
– the last thing you want to do is sound entitled – yes it is your right to date whoever you want but you also have to be sensitive about your parents’ feelings!
– be calm, collected, and understanding towards your parents 🤍
3️⃣ always put yourself in your parents’ shoes
– inherently, protective parents are just fearful and they don’t want you to get hurt!
– make sure that you have considered all their concerns and do take what they feel to heart
– make it clear that their concerns have been given weight, and provide solutions to ease their worries!
– THEY LOVE YOU.
tldr: plan ahead, be calm and always remember to be empathetic ❤️ it’s always better to tell them sooner than later 👍🏻
